Libraries in the Santa Ynez Valley will host a number of events in February starting with a Chinese New Year’s craft event at both Buellton and Solvang Libraries on Feb. 2. Check out the special events happening at the library this month:

Robert and Guifen Ayres and their children are bringing a Chinese New Year culture and craft event to both Solvang and Buellton Libraries on Feb. 2.

Sat., Feb. 2:  10:30-11:30 a.m.  “Chinese New Year Craft”  Solvang Library

Sat., Feb. 2:  2:00 -3:00 p.m.  “Chinese New Year Craft”  Buellton Library

Learn about the Chinese New Year traditions, as well as how to give New Year’s greetings in Chinese!  Learn the brushstrokes to write a simple Chinese character.  For children 6 years old and up as well as interested adults.   All materials supplied.  Space is limited so please register at SBPLibrary.org  to reserve a spot.

 

Sat., Feb. 2:  1:00-3:00 p.m.  “Dungeons and Dragons” – Solvang Library

Learn the basics of this classic fantasy role-playing game from the knowledgeable staff of Metro Entertainment. Whether you are new to the game or already playing, this demo and playing session will help you get into the game.  Techniques for taking on the Dungeon Master/storyteller role will also be covered.  All ages welcome, best for ages 10 and older.  Ages 8 and 9 are welcome with an accompanying adult. Thurs.,  Feb 7:  10:30 -11:20 a.m.  “TED & Conversation”  Solvang Library

Watch one or two short talks from the famous TED Talks series together, and share thoughts afterward.   Participants choose the topic- bring a friend!  Monthly, first Thursdays.   

 

Thur., Feb. 7: 7:00p.m. Mushrooms in Southern California – Bob Cummings”   Los Olivos Library/LOCO Hall  A free lecture with Dr. Cummings,  Professor of Biology at Santa Barbara City College, co-sponsored by Santa Ynez Valley Natural History Society at the LOCO Hall: 2374 Alamo Pintado Avenue in Los Olivos.

Sat., Feb 9: 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.  “Valentine Cards”  Buellton Library

A Makers program for ages 5-500.  Join us to make valentines using folding, stamping, and cutting techniques!

 

Sat., Feb. 9: 3:00-4:30 p.m. “Investors’ Roundtable”   Solvang Library 

Helping individual investors since 1995, the Investors’ Roundtable welcomes both novice and veteran investors to informal presentations and discussions.

 

Tues., Feb 12:  6:00-7:30  p.m.  “B.Y.O. (Bring Your Own) Book Club”  Solvang Library at Wandering Dog

A book club with no obligations, just great conversation.   Meet up with Solvang library staff at the Wandering Dog to share what you’ve been reading with other library readers. Join our monthly discussions!   Copies of the book can be checked out from the service desk.  Meets monthly on third Fridays. The book for February is The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the fire that saved America, by Timothy Egan

 

Thurs., Feb 21 : 3:30-4:40 p.m. “Trading Card Club”   Solvang Library

Meet your friends to play Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, or Magic The Gathering.  Beginners are welcome.

3:30 pm meet, trade, set up deck;  3:40 pm Battles begin.  Bring your deck, and come on time:  there are prizes for participating!  If you don’t have your own Pokemon deck, the group coordinators can loan you one for the event.

 

Sat., Feb. 23: 1:00 p.m.   “Movie: Marshall”  Solvang Library

Free matinee on the  4th Saturday of each month.  Showing in Feb: Marshall , a 2017 legal drama rated PG-13,  118 minutes.  “Marshall revisits an early episode in the life of Thurgood Marshall, the civil rights lawyer who became the first African-American Supreme Court justice”

 

Wed., Feb. 27: 10:30-11:30 a.m. “Music with Miss Diane” Solvang Library

A music participation program for you and your baby/toddler/preschooler. Diane Byington of Solvang Conservatory shares songs, instrument play, rhythm chants and movement in a relaxed, playful setting. Caregiver participation required. Pre-registration guarantees a spot.
