Practice reading skills with a furry friend!  A great way for young readers to practice: reading aloud to the kindest, least judgmental listeners around. Drop in for a 10-15 minute individual session with a “tutor.”

SB Reads:  Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus   This October, the Santa Barbara Public Library is excited to celebrate the bicentennial of Mary Shelley’s classic as the library’s 2018 selection for our community reading program.  Look for programs all month long!

SB Reads: Ghost Story Challenge!  For adults, and for young writers 6thgrade and up.Solvang Library will be receiving entries up through end of day Tuesday October 23.  The challenge: write a story (500 words or less) that is scary or mysterious and involves the supernatural (no crime stories). Submit in the body of an email (no attachments) to Solvanglibrary@santabarbaraCA.gov.  Include your name, phone, and age category Adult (18 and older) or Teen (6th-12thgrades). Questions, call the Solvang library. Winners will be announced at the Solvang Library book discussion October 30!

 

MakeDo:Frankenstein, Cardboard Fun

Stories of Service and Sacrifice: Three Evenings with Gary Robinson

Wednesday October 10, 7 p.m. – Los Olivos Library/Historic Grange Hall

Part 2: The Language of VictoryA  22 minute video will be followed by Q & A with Robinson. Re-released in 2014, this documentary and accompanying book reveal little known details of American Indian soldiers who used their native languages to send secret U.S. military messages during both World Wars I and II.  Co-sponsored by the Los Olivos Community Organization.

Part 3: Healing the Warrior’s Heart:a 56 minute video by Robinson examines ways that the traditional Native American healing and spirituality is being used to heal all veterans suffering from PTSD.  There will be opportunity after the viewing for discussion and Q & A.   Co-sponsored by the Los Olivos Community Organization.

Birds of the Channel Islands – Paul Collins a lecture and book signing

Thursday October 18  7 – 8:30 p.m.  Solvang Library (Superior Courtroom)

Paul Collins, Curator of Vertebrate Zoology at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, will provide a visual tour of the rich avifauna of  the California Channel Islands.  Co-Sponsored by the Santa Ynez Valley Natural History Society.  For adults and students 12 and up.

A music participation program for you and your baby/toddler/preschooler. Diane Byington of Solvang Conservatory shares songs, instrument play, rhythm chants and movement in a relaxed, playful setting. Caregiver participation required. Pre-registration guarantees a spot.

 

The Mythology of Halloween

A special illustrated lecture by Arthur George, cultural historian and scholar of mythology.  George, author of the blog “Mythology Matters” will examine not only the early beginnings of this popular holiday, but the myths which have grown up around it.

 

Movie:  Frankenstein & Bride of Frankenstein

Saturday October 27, 1 p.m.  Solvang Library

A double bill!   At 1 pm, the original 1931 Frankenstein, with Boris Karloff and, Colin Clive, and Mae Clarke; at 2:30 pm, the 1935 Bride of Frankenstein, with Elsa Lanchester, Boris Karloff, Colin Clive and more.  These are the classic James Whale films made at Universal studios. Enjoy them on the large screen! The films are not rated, running times are 71 minutes and 75 minutes.

Dress up your preschool storytimers and bring them in for a fun filled storytime. After storytime join us in creating Frankentoys, creating new toys out of the parts of other toys.
