Staff Report

The Solvang City Council recently awarded a construction contract to JJ Fisher Construction, of Nipomo, for the Fifth Street Sidewalk Project.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early July with project completion in October. The City of Solvang Public Works Department was awarded a competitive grant in the amount of $168,000 by the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) from the Measure A Safe Routes to School, Bicycle and Pedestrian Program. The grant will cover approximately 50 percent of the Fifth Street Sidewalk Project construction cost.

The Fifth Street Sidewalk Project includes new sidewalk and minor roadway widening along the east side of Solvang’s Fifth Street from Oak Street to Mission Drive. The project also includes new driveway approaches, access ramps, retaining wall and related work. The location was identified by the City Council as a high priority location for the installation of new sidewalk in the City’s 2016 Sidewalk Master Plan.

“The Fifth Street Sidewalk Project will enhance the safety of students and pedestrians traveling to Solvang School and Mission Drive from the dense residential areas south of Mission and west of Fifth,” said Solvang Public Works Director Matt van der Linden. “The widening of Fifth Street will also improve traffic flow in this area and enhance the quality of life for our residents.”

“We appreciate your patience and understanding during the inconvenience of the construction,” added van der Linden. “Once completed, the project will provide beneficial and needed improvements to Solvang.”
