Spring 2017 credit classes begin the week of Jan. 23 at Allan Hancock College. Registration is under way.

Many new, continuing and returning students must be assessed prior to enrolling. This is done through START (Student Testing, Advising, Retention and Transition) placement exams. START is a process developed by Allan Hancock College to help students succeed in college. The assessment is free and is not an entrance exam. Anyone 18 years or older who can benefit from instruction is eligible to attend Allan Hancock College. High school graduates under age 18 are also eligible for enrollment, as are high school students who enroll in Hancock’s College Now! program. All students will need to complete the online admissions application to receive their AHC student ID number that is required to take the START test. Students with certain qualifications, including students taking classes for life-long learning or those with degrees, are exempt from assessment.

For assessment requirements, dates and times of testing and a complete list of exemptions to assessment, go to www.hancockcollege.edu and Quick Link “Testing Center” from the home page, or call 922-6966 or toll free 1-866-DIAL AHC (342-5242) ext. 3364.

START sessions are available at the Santa Maria campus and the Lompoc Valley Center on a walk-in basis during specified days and times. No appointments are necessary.

“The simple, computerized START test is a real boost to students,” said Rob Parisi, the college’s dean of student services. “It gives students flexibility for scheduling the test, and allows them to pace themselves while actually taking it. No computer experience is necessary.”
